There are several passive shading solutions to reduce overheating in buildings ranging from internal curtains to external roller screens. This solar shading performance comparison from the European Solar Shading Organisation shows that external blinds offer the best reduction in solar gain.
There is no question that internal curtains have an important place in reducing heat loss, beaten only by aluminium roller shutters which have foam filled insulated slats. Solar film has poor heat loss performance and cannot be retracted like blinds to allow the solar gain when needed in cooler temperatures.
External screens and venetians provide good light energy performance and thermal comfort. Screen fabrics offer a range of opening factors retaining the view to the outside whilst venetians offer ultimate control of light through to blackout.
