THE PROBLEM
We are in an energy and climate crisis; our hospitals are overheating, and temperatures are getting warmer. The NHS cannot afford increasing energy bills and we cannot afford to ignore our net zero targets.
THE THEORY
External shading is effective in blocking out solar gain as the solar radiation does not reach the window glass and radiate into the room.
IES VE thermal dynamic simulations were carried out to establish the impact of external shading of a typical 6 bed ward at an existing hospital in the South East of England that is prone to overheating.
The ‘base case’ as existing simulation predicted a maximum internal temperature of 36.26°C. External shading was added to the south facing glazing to test its impact on internal temperature. External shading was found to reduce the predicted internal maximum temperature by 4.26°C to 32.00°C. The frequency of hours of high temperatures is lower as maximum temperatures are reduced. The passive measures to reduce internal peak temperatures are becoming more important with the warming climate and emerging issues with energy supplies.

THE SOLUTION
External blinds can be programmed to respond to real time weather data, optimising building use and efficiency. Alternatively, individual remote controls allow the patient to raise, lower or tilt the blind for light and shade.
- External roller screens
External roller screens retract into a small box above the window and are pin mounted onto side guides. The side guides have a zip seal which keeps the screen fabric taut and improves wind resistance.
A single blind can be specified to cover an area of up to 18m2.
The screen fabrics, made from PVC coated fibre glass or polyester, are extremely durable and require the bare minimum of maintenance. Fabrics are specified with different openness factors from blackout to 14% which retain light and the view to the outside.

- External venetian blinds
External venetian blinds can be tilted open and closed to enable natural daylight or blackout as required whilst reducing overheating.
A single blind can be specified to cover an area of 20m2 with cables or side guides for improved wind resistance.
Both types of external blinds are suitable for retrofit and new build installations.

MORE BENEFITS!
In addition to the important energy saving benefits of external blinds, they:
- Eliminate the need for internal blinds therefore reducing infection
- Blackout the room for improved sleep
- Provide acoustic insulation
