Shading for Housing Design Guide

Shading design guide for a changing climate

We were invited to the launch of the new guide « Shading for Housing » by the Good Homes Alliance (GHA) and the British Blind and Shutter Association (BBSA) hosted by Pollard Thomas Architects at their offices in London last week.

The opening slide stated that 90% of the UK housing stock will suffer from overheating by the mid 2030’s according to a report by ARUP for the Climate Change Committee.

The excellent research led by Pollard Thomas Edwards calls for a considered approach to external shading to ensure a more sympathetic and cost effective solution to reduce overheating. « Future proofing is cheaper than retrofitting » but too often this essential design element is ignored to save costs in the short term. Furthermore, the building regulations do not factor in future weather files to future proof our buildings.

Time for change!
